What is a soundbath and why do you need one?

A few years ago, I first heard the term “soundbath” when a friend of mine asked if I’d like to go to one with her. I immediately imagined water and sounds and didn’t really feel like it was for me. (I’m not a big fan of “water experiences.” So I politely declined.

I’d been exploring alternative wellness experiences at the time and a year later as a Mother’s Day present my husband went to a spiritual shop with my daughter and picked out a few things for me. One of which was a small Tibetan Soundbowl. I had not idea what it was so it sat in my office as decoration for a really long time!

My journey with sound therapy didn’t start for a while and it wasn’t a big revelation. It was more like a gentle nudge in the right direction.

At the time, I was really burnout. I had two little kids, a fast-paced freelance marketing business, and no idea how to slow down. My mind was constantly racing. Even when I wasn’t working, I was thinking about work. I lived in a cycle of over-delivering, people-pleasing, and running on empty. I didn’t know how to stop.

Then one day, I found myself at a shamanic drumming circle. I can’t even remember how I got there, just something in me said go. I sat in a room full of people, the low hum of the drum reverberating through my body, and for the first time in what felt like years, my mind stopped.

No thoughts. No to-do lists. Just vibration, rhythm, and the feeling of being completely present. A feeling of remembering.

That was the start of my sound journey experience! I bought my amazing shamanic drum a few months later and started going to regular drumming circles. Then I was introduced to Conscious Connected Breathwork and finally a Soundbath!

When I experienced my first soundbath it was like nothing I had experienced before. Deep stillness, listening to the vibrations of all crystal bowls and other instruments. As soon as I left the soundbath I knew I wanted to give this experience to other people so I trained to be a sound therapist.

Now, I use sound healing in everything I do - from my monthly women’s sound baths to my mum and baby sessions. Watching others experience the same deep stillness I once craved is one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done.

I’ve seen babies sleep better after sound baths, their tiny bodies fully relaxing in a way that’s so rare in the overstimulating world we live in. I’ve had mums tell me they hadn’t felt that calm since before their babies were born. I’ve watched people burst into tears as they release emotions they didn’t even realise they were holding.

This is why I do this work. Because I know firsthand what it’s like to feel completely disconnected from yourself. And I also know that healing doesn’t have to be hard. Sometimes, you just need to lie down, close your eyes, and let the sound do the rest.

Physical Benefits of a Soundbath

  • Deep Relaxation - A soundbath helps to lower cortisol levels and activates the parasympathetic nervous system, helping the body shift into a state of rest and repair.

  • Improved Sleep - The frequencies help slow down brainwave activity, supporting deeper, more restorative sleep.

  • Reduced Physical Tension and Pain - The vibrations go deep into the muscles and tissues, easing tension, stiffness and chronic pain.

  • Lower Blood Pressure and Heart Rate - Sound healing has been shown to calm the nervous system, reducing stress related physical symptoms.

  • Boosted Immune System - Relaxation and vibrational therapy supports the body’s natural healing and immune functions.
